Vue, one of Britain's largest cinema chains with 94 sites across the nation, has permanently shut down its flagship Cardiff venue. The cinema at Stadium Plaza in the city centre closed its doors for the last time on June 25, after operating for over 20 years.
Closure Confirmed
The company had revealed earlier in June that closure was imminent and confirmed it was in consultation with employees regarding potential redundancies. No specific date was given at the time, but a statement read: "We can confirm that our site at Stadium Plaza will be closing later this month. We are consulting with our Cardiff colleagues, who are our priority, and until this point, we will continue to provide cinemagoers in Cardiff the very best big screen experience."
Final Day and Impact
The venue ultimately shut its doors for good on June 25, with film listings removed from its website. A notice on the site stated: "The credits may be rolling in Cardiff but Vue is still open in Cwmbran, Merthyr and Swansea." The closure comes during peak summer blockbuster season, with major releases including Toy Story 5, Disclosure Day, Scary Movie, Masters of the Universe, Obsession and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Vue's Position in the Market
With 94 locations, Vue ranks as the UK's third-biggest cinema operator, trailing Odeon and Cineworld. Its portfolio encompasses a combined 916 screens, according to the Mirror. The Cardiff site, positioned directly on the River Taff, was renowned for its panoramic city vistas and featured seven screens. It first opened in 2005 in the heart of the Welsh capital, adjacent to the iconic Principality Stadium and moments from the city's main railway station.
