United Airlines Updates Contract to Enforce Headphone Usage on Flights
United Airlines has discreetly revised its official "contract of carriage," introducing a new clause that targets passengers who decline to use headphones while listening to audio or video content during flights. This policy shift means that travellers who generate noise by playing media without headphones could now face permanent removal from their flights, moving beyond mere social disapproval from fellow passengers.
Strict Enforcement and Refund Eligibility
According to the updated terms and conditions, which were modified last Friday, United Airlines explicitly reserves the right to refuse transport on a permanent basis to any passenger engaging in such activities. The airline stated, "UA has the right to refuse transport, on a permanent basis, any passenger who engages in any of the activities in this Rule." However, in a conciliatory note, United Airlines indicated that any passengers removed under this rule may be eligible for a refund upon request, providing a potential financial recourse for those affected.
Headphone Provision and Expert Commentary
For passengers who forget their headphones, United Airlines offers a solution: flight attendants may provide free earbuds if available, as noted on the airline's website. Travel expert Scott Keyes praised the new rule as a "graceful way" to manage individuals who resist using headphones. He explained to CBS News, "This is in line with how the vast majority of travellers comport themselves and would like others to comport themselves. It's usually only a small number of folks on airplanes who are making noise by not using headphones, so this is a graceful way to handle those folks."
Comparison with Other Airlines
While other major U.S. carriers like Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines encourage headphone usage for passenger comfort, Keyes highlighted that United Airlines appears to be the first to implement such stringent enforcement measures. Delta's website advises, "For the comfort of everyone around you, please use earbuds or headphones with any personal electronic device during your flight," and Southwest states, "Headphones are required whenever a Passenger is listening to any audio." However, none have gone as far as United in explicitly threatening permanent removal for non-compliance.
The Independent has reached out to United Airlines for further comment on this policy update, but as of now, the airline has not provided additional details. This move reflects a growing emphasis on in-flight etiquette and noise management, potentially setting a precedent for other airlines to follow in enhancing passenger experience through stricter regulations.
