A roundabout near Colchester railway station has been dubbed the UK's most confusing, featuring 48 traffic lights and a layout that frequently causes drivers to travel in the wrong direction. The North Station roundabout, described as a 'monster', has surpassed the previous record of 42 sets of lights at Grovehill Junction in Beverley, East Yorkshire, after additional signals were installed to manage increasing traffic flow.
Dashcam footage on YouTube shows vehicles navigating the roundabout backwards and swerving across lanes to make exits. One clip captures a car going the wrong way around the roundabout while staying in the inside lane. The high frequency of near-accidents has been attributed to confusion over which lanes to use, as well as the roundabout's location near Colchester Hospital, a major ASDA superstore, and the train station, resulting in heavy traffic.
Other notorious roundabouts include Swansea's Ynysforgan roundabout, which some drivers avoid entirely by taking long detours. One driver told WalesOnline: 'My foot is constantly hovering over the brake while I’m driving on it and I’m constantly looking over my shoulder because I’m so paranoid somebody is going to hit me.'
