Ukraine train collision near Lviv injures five, including driver

Five people have been injured after two trains collided near Lviv in western Ukraine, with passengers scrambling from carriages following the incident. The injured include the driver of the diesel train, who sustained a leg injury.

Collision on Lviv–Sokal route

The collision involved a diesel train travelling on the Lviv–Sokal route and an electric locomotive, occurring this evening. The diesel train was departing Pidzamche station in Lviv when the crash happened.

Four passengers are also receiving medical assistance following the collision, while the drivers of the electric locomotive were not injured, according to Ukraine's national railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia.

Emergency response and investigation

Emergency services are at the scene, and an investigation has been launched by the train operator. Sadovy said on Telegram that rescuers are working to free the driver of the diesel train, who has been trapped inside the cabin.

Sadovy stated: "According to Ukrzaliznytsia, during the departure of a diesel train on the Lviv - Sokal route, a collision occurred with an electric locomotive."

"It is known that the driver of the diesel train sustained a leg injury. Rescuers are currently working to free him from the cabin, where he was trapped. Four passengers are also receiving medical assistance. The drivers of the electric locomotive were not injured. Rescuers, medics, and railway workers are working at the scene. The circumstances of the accident are being investigated."
