Drivers across the UK face steeper costs when dropping off passengers at major airports, as several hubs implement sharp increases to their 'kiss and fly' fees. The controversial charges – applied when motorists briefly stop to let travellers exit vehicles near terminals – have drawn criticism from consumer groups amid the cost-of-living crisis.
Which Airports Are Raising Fees?
Manchester Airport leads the hike, introducing a £7 charge for just 5 minutes in its drop-off zone – a 40% increase from previous rates. Other major hubs following suit include:
- London Luton: £5 for 10 minutes (up from £3.50)
- Birmingham: £4 for 15 minutes
- Glasgow: £4 for 10 minutes
How to Avoid the Charges
Savvy travellers can bypass fees by:
- Using free drop-off areas further from terminals (with shuttle services)
- Opting for public transport where available
- Parking in nearby streets (where permitted)
An RAC spokesperson warned: "These excessive charges unfairly penalise those showing basic courtesy by driving loved ones to the airport." Airports defend the increases as necessary for congestion management and infrastructure upkeep.
