Etihad Rail Unveils National Passenger Network Set to Transform UAE Travel
In a landmark development for the United Arab Emirates, Etihad Rail has announced plans to launch its first comprehensive passenger railway network in 2026. This ambitious project will fundamentally reshape intercity travel across the Emirates, offering a modern, efficient alternative to road transport.
Revolutionising Connectivity Across the Emirates
The new network will connect 11 cities and regions through strategically positioned stations, creating the UAE's first fully-integrated national passenger railway system. This represents a significant expansion for Etihad Rail, which has previously focused exclusively on freight transport operations.
Mohammed Alshehii, Chief Projects Officer at Etihad Rail, confirmed that the service will officially commence operations in 2026. 'This achievement is the result of three years of intensive planning, design, and delivery,' he stated, revealing that the project has involved more than 7,000 experts and workers accumulating 24.5 million working hours.
Strategic Station Locations and Phased Implementation
The railway will be rolled out in carefully planned phases. Initial stations announced in early 2025 will be located in four key emirates:
- Abu Dhabi (Mohammed Bin Zayed City)
- Dubai (Jumeirah Golf Estates)
- Sharjah (University City)
- Fujairah (Al Hilal area)
Subsequent stations will expand the network to include Al Sila', Al Dhannah, Al Mirfa, Madinat Zayed, Mezaira'a, Al Faya and Al Dhaid, ensuring comprehensive coverage across the nation.
Cutting Travel Times Dramatically
The most transformative aspect of the new service will be its impact on journey times. Trains operating at speeds up to 125 miles per hour will reduce travel between Dubai and Abu Dhabi to just 50 minutes – a remarkable improvement compared to the current 90-minute bus or car journey that is often extended by traffic congestion.
'Our trains have been designed to offer a reliable, congestion-free alternative for intercity travel, with a focus on reducing journey times,' explained Alshehii. 'It is hoped the new development by Etihad Rail will transform mobility across the UAE.'
Premium Passenger Experience and Capacity
Etihad Rail has prioritised passenger comfort and convenience in its train design. Each train will accommodate up to 400 passengers and feature:
- Safe and ergonomic seating arrangements
- Contemporary interior designs
- Full Wi-Fi coverage throughout carriages
- Individual power outlets at every seat
Services will operate on precise, regular schedules, providing citizens, residents and visitors with a dependable transportation option that eliminates the uncertainty of road travel.
Extensive Testing and Safety Assurance
The railway company has already made substantial progress toward the 2026 launch. Ten of the planned 13 trains have already arrived in the UAE, where they have undergone rigorous testing and certification to meet the highest international safety and quality standards.
Broader National Benefits Beyond Mobility
Beyond providing superior transportation, the passenger rail network is expected to deliver wide-ranging benefits to the UAE:
- Tourism Boost: Enhanced connectivity will significantly boost domestic tourism by making attractions across different emirates more accessible.
- Environmental Impact: The railway will support national efforts to reduce emissions by providing a sustainable alternative to car travel.
- Economic Integration: Strengthened social and economic ties between the Emirates will create a more connected and accessible nation.
This transformative project represents more than just a transportation upgrade – it signifies a strategic investment in the UAE's future connectivity, sustainability and economic integration that will benefit generations to come.
