Fire crews are battling a significant blaze at the Tata Steel site in Port Talbot, with thick black smoke billowing into the sky and prompting warnings for nearby residents to stay indoors.

The fire broke out on Wednesday evening, with alarms sounding at the plant around 7pm. Residents reported seeing dark smoke pouring from the site, with some saying the smell of smoke lingered in the air. Sirens continued to sound into the night, according to local accounts.
Videos shared with Wales Online show dense smoke rising from the steelworks, which is located close to residential areas. Some residents described a taste of smoke in the air, raising concerns about air quality.
Official Response
A spokesperson for South Wales Police stated: "Emergency services are currently dealing with an incident at Tata Steel, Port Talbot. Large plumes of smoke are visible in the area."
The police have issued advice for residents: "Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed. Please avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible. Thank you for your patience."
