A campaign to dual the A1 in Northumberland has gained significant momentum, with a new petition attracting hundreds of signatures and support from major political figures. The push comes after a series of tragic accidents that claimed six lives in separate incidents within weeks.
Petition Launched After Fatal Crashes
The 'Dual the A1 and Save Lives' campaign was launched following three separate accidents on the A1 in Northumberland that killed six people. The petition calls on the government to urgently re-examine the case for dualling the road, which is a single carriageway in several stretches despite being a key route between London and Edinburgh.
Local residents have shared their experiences and frustrations. Tom, from Bedlington, who has used the road for over 60 years, said: "I have seen several improvements, but it is vital that this last step is taken without further delay. Not only is the single carriageway a danger in itself, but it encourages cars to race on the last section of dual carriageway to reach the single section ahead of slow moving vehicles."
Political Support
North East Mayor Kim McGuinness and Northumberland County Council leader Glen Sanderson have both voiced strong support for the campaign. McGuinness stated: "We're not going to shut up about this, and that's critical. Everybody agrees this needs to happen. I live near that road and it's a disaster. We want to grow that region and we want it to be a place that thrives."
Sanderson added: "This road is not fit for purpose. That mix between single and dual carriageway has a proven safety deficit. It's difficult for people to drive on. That causes frustration and that causes accidents. I cannot sit here and see these horrendous fatalities, and all the suffering that causes to the families, and do nothing."
Safety Statistics
According to official figures, 49 people have died and nearly 300 serious injuries have occurred on the A1 in Northumberland over the last 20 years. The majority of these incidents happened on the single carriageway stretches. In addition to the six deaths in May and June, three other people died in separate incidents in January.
Heather, from Newcastle, commented: "Please Dual the A1 as soon as possible it is a very dangerous stretch of road and is the main link between London and Edinburgh, saving lives is more important than saving money! Do something Now!" Philip, from Morpeth, echoed: "The groundwork is done, money spent. Dual the A1 with better junctions for safer travelling."
Government Urged to Act
The government is being urged to address the 'ridiculous situation' where the A1 is a dual carriageway everywhere except certain stretches in Northumberland. Safety improvements, including junction work, are scheduled, but campaigners insist dualling is the only long-term solution. McGuinness said: "Any investment is welcome. But to open up our economy and give us the transport system we need, to improve the safety, we have to do this. It's the only answer."
