Scenic Settle-Carlisle Railway Offers £1.50 Tickets for 150th Anniversary
Passengers can experience one of the United Kingdom's most breathtaking railway journeys for a mere £1.50 this year, as part of celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the historic Settle-Carlisle line. This picturesque route, which traverses the Pennines, Yorkshire Dales, and Cumbria's Eden Valley, is renowned for its stunning landscapes and iconic landmarks like the Ribblehead Viaduct.
Special Anniversary Events and Ticket Offers
Railway company Northern is planning to release thousands of discounted £1.50 tickets for travel on the Settle-Carlisle line in the coming months. Further details on how customers can secure these affordable fares will be announced soon. In addition, the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company is organising a chartered steam train journey from Carlisle to York on Monday, 25 May. The steam train, featuring the Battle of Britain Class "Tangmere" locomotive, will depart Carlisle at approximately 7:45 am, with pickup stops at Appleby, Settle, and Skipton before arriving in York.
The journey will showcase Yorkshire's Three Peaks and cross the famous 24-arch Ribblehead Viaduct. Upon arrival in York, passengers will have several hours to explore the historic city before boarding the steam train for the return trip to Carlisle, scheduled to arrive at 10:10 pm.
Historical Significance and Community Impact
The Settle-Carlisle route, spanning 72 miles with 14 tunnels and over 20 viaducts, first opened to passengers in May 1876. In the 1980s, the line faced closure threats, but after a vigorous campaign by activists, it was saved with intervention from then-Minister for Transport Michael Portillo. Today, the line serves as a vital connection for communities across Yorkshire and Cumbria, offering a sustainable and scenic way to access the Yorkshire Dales, Westmorland Dales, and Lake District.
Pete Myers, chair of the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company, emphasised the line's uniqueness and its role in fostering local tourism. "In our special anniversary year, we are working closely with communities along the line to provide a host of events for visitors and locals to enjoy, all accessible via our award-winning line," he stated.
Record Passenger Numbers and Future Prospects
Northern reported nearly one million passenger journeys on the Settle-Carlisle line in 2025, the highest annual total since the Covid-19 pandemic. Alex Hornby, Northern's commercial and customer director, expressed confidence that the 150th anniversary celebrations will help surpass this milestone in 2026. "It's easy to see why this line is so popular, and we're confident we will see more than one million journeys this year," he said, noting the route's recognition as one of Europe's most scenic trips.
The anniversary events aim to boost tourism and highlight the railway's enduring appeal, combining historical preservation with modern travel experiences. With affordable tickets and special excursions, 2026 promises to be a landmark year for this beloved British rail journey.
