North East roadworks and closures: Full list for week beginning Aug 17

Drivers in the North East are facing a series of road closures and temporary traffic lights this week, with works taking place across Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Northumberland, Sunderland, and County Durham.

Newcastle

In Newcastle, temporary traffic lights are in place on Walbottle Road due to gas main work, with restrictions until 18th August. Further gas main work on Ferguson's Lane and Cardigan Terrace also causes temporary lights, with the latter until 21st August. Roadworks on Wansbeck Road at Coxlodge will see delays until 24th August, while electricity work on Coley Hill Close and gas main work on Coppice Way will cause traffic to take turns until 26th and 27th August respectively.

Longer-term closures include Market Street Eastbound from Pilgrim Street to Carliol Street until 9th October, and Worswick Street One Way Street closed from Pilgrim Street to Carliol Square until 10th April 2027. Whitehouse Road in Scotswood is closed in both directions until 18th July 2027, and the A167 Tyne Bridge has a lane closed with a 30 mph speed restriction until 16th June 2028.

Gateshead and North Tyneside

In Gateshead, the A167 Gateshead Highway is closed in both directions for demolition of the flyover until 18th May, with related closures on A184 Park Lane, Hawks Road, and Quarryfield Road until 21st August. Temporary traffic lights are also in place on A692 Lobley Hill Road, A167 Durham Road, and B6317 Whickham Highway, with the latter until 4th November.

North Tyneside has temporary traffic lights on B1322 at Backworth, Earsdon Road at Shiremoor, and B1319 Market Street at Dudley, among others. Nelson Street is closed until 2nd October, and Pottery Lane until 31st March 2027. The A192 Preston North Road has one lane closed for junction improvements until 10th November 2026.

South Tyneside and Northumberland

South Tyneside sees River Drive in South Shields closed until 31st August, and temporary traffic lights on B1298 Abingdon Way and Didcot Way in Boldon Colliery until 18th December.

Northumberland has temporary traffic lights on B6320 Church Lane in Wark, A696 near the A68, and B1329 Ridley Avenue, among others. Mitford Road at Morpeth is closed until 31st August, and B6321 at Corbridge is closed until 22nd December. Long-term works include temporary lights on B1317 Killingworth Lane until 22nd September 2027.

Sunderland and County Durham

In Sunderland, Elmwood Avenue is closed until 2nd September, Mowbray Road until 31st December, and Easington Street until 9th January 2029. Temporary traffic lights are in place on B1285 and B1260 Gillas Lane West, with the latter until 13th October.

County Durham has numerous temporary traffic lights and closures, including Station Lane in Newfield until 17th August, and Gill Side View in Consett until 20th August. Long-term works include narrow lanes on Framwelgate Waterside in Durham until 31st December 2027.
