Newcastle Racecourse has relaxed its dress code for Plate Day on June 27, 2026, due to the forecasted heatwave, but two items remain strictly prohibited: football tops and sportswear.
Dress Code Relaxation for Hot Weather
With temperatures expected to reach the mid-to-late 20s Celsius in the North East, the racecourse has permitted shorts for the first time, allowing attendees to stay cool while maintaining style. Guests are also encouraged to wear sun hats and take advantage of free suncream stations and complimentary water available at all bars.
Simon Duke, What's On Editor for the Newcastle Chronicle, reported that the decision follows a week of sweltering conditions, similar to Radio 1's Big Weekend in Sunderland during the May bank holiday, where temperatures neared 30°C.
Banned Items: Football Tops and Sportswear
Despite the relaxed rules, football tops and sportswear are still banned. Organisers advise attendees planning to watch a football match on Saturday evening to leave their England shirts at home. Fancy dress is allowed in the Grandstand, provided it does not cause offence.
Special Measures for Horses
The racecourse has also implemented special measures to keep horses cool during the Northumberland Plate Festival, ensuring their welfare during the hot weather.
Plate Day remains one of the hottest dates in Newcastle's social calendar, drawing large crowds for a day of racing and fashion.
