Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has announced a new night train service connecting Basel to Copenhagen and Malmö, launching on 15 April 2026. The EuroNight train will run three times per week in each direction, year-round, with departures from Basel SBB at 5.35pm on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, arriving in Malmö at 9.35am. Return services from Malmö depart at 6.57pm on Thursdays, Saturdays and Mondays, reaching Basel at 11.30am.
The train will accommodate approximately 350 passengers in sleeping, couchette and seating cars, including an accessible compartment. Passengers in single, double or triple compartments can expect fresh sheets, a personal washbasin and breakfast included. Deluxe compartments add a private shower, toilet, toiletries and towels. Couchette cars offer a simpler berth option, while seating cars provide standard seats for those not booking a bed.
Intermediate stops include Frankfurt, Hamburg and Copenhagen Airport. The train will not call at Copenhagen Central Station due to time constraints, but passengers can reach the city centre from the airport in about 15 minutes via another service. Tickets are now on sale via the SBB website, app and travel centres.
However, SBB has warned that the service is contingent on parliamentary approval of federal funding. The Swiss government has earmarked approximately CHF 47 million (£44 million) under its Climate Change Act until 2030 to support night trains, but the budget must still be approved. If funding does not go ahead, SBB will inform customers and refund any tickets purchased.
The new route comes amid challenges for other night services. Last month, it was announced that the Nightjet service between Paris and Berlin will cease in December after the French Ministry of Transport withdrew state subsidies.
