Manston Airport, formerly known as Kent International Airport and London Manston Airport, is poised for a significant revival after lying dormant for nearly a decade. The hub, which once facilitated flights from the UK to popular European destinations like Portugal and Italy, has been largely abandoned since 2014, serving mainly as a lorry park in recent years.
Historical Context and Recent Developments
Airlines such as the now-defunct carrier Flybe and KLM previously operated from Manston, but the final commercial flight departed in April 2014. In 2019, RiverOak Strategic Partners (RSP) acquired the airport and has since been diligently working to restore services, with a focus on transforming it into a cargo and freight hub rather than a traditional passenger terminal.
Consultation Phase Underway
This week, plans have entered the critical 'consultation and engagement' stage, marking a pivotal moment in the airport's redevelopment. The airspace change proposal has progressed to stage three, as reported by Save Manston Airport, triggering public consultations to gather feedback on proposed flight paths and airspace structures.
The consultation period will run from Monday, March 16, 2026, to Monday, June 22, 2026, featuring a series of in-person and online events throughout April. These sessions aim to inform the local community about the specifics of the proposed flight paths and airport operations.
Strategic Importance and Economic Impact
A statement on RSP's website highlights the broader implications: 'Once reopened, Manston will help the UK trade across the globe, importing vital and time-sensitive goods, including fresh fruit and medical supplies. It will provide air freight operators with a realistic alternative to overcrowded London airports, ease road congestion caused by lorries using the Channel Tunnel, and boost economic growth and jobs in Kent.'
Tony Freudmann, director at RiverOak Strategic Partners, emphasized the significance of this step: 'This consultation is an important step in our ambitions to reopen Manston Airport, representing a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver new runway capacity to support the UK air cargo market and transform the economic landscape in East Kent.'
Regulatory Approvals and Future Timeline
RSP's efforts to reactivate Manston have been ongoing since the purchase, with a Development Consent Order granted in 2020 and an updated version approved in 2022. The Civil Aviation Authority's Citizen Space will release additional information on March 16, 2026, allowing local residents, businesses, and other stakeholders to contribute their perspectives before plans advance further.
While no official launch date has been set, the first takeoff is targeted for 2029, marking a new chapter for this historic airport as it transitions into a modern air freight facility designed to enhance UK logistics and regional prosperity.
