Manchester trains cancelled after overhead wire damage

Twenty train services between Manchester Piccadilly and Hazel Grove have been cancelled today (November 2) after damage to the overhead electric wires, with disruption expected to continue into the evening.

Passengers planning to travel between the two stations have been warned of multiple cancellations up until later this evening.

Northern issues apology and advice

A spokesperson for Northern rail said: "Due to damage to the overhead electric wires between Manchester Piccadilly and Hazel Grove fewer trains are able to run on all lines."

Northern has issued advice for affected customers on their website, stating: "We apologise for the cancellation of this service today. If the train you have a ticket for is cancelled, you can travel on any Northern, TransPennine Express service within 2 hours before or after your cancelled service was due to depart."

Passengers requiring connecting services are advised to check information screens, visit www.nationalrail.co.uk/journey-planner, or speak to a member of staff where available. Northern also reminded customers: "You can message us on X.com, @northernassist (between 06:00 and 22:00) or search for #NorthernUpdates. If you've been delayed by 15 minutes or more, hold on to your tickets and claim compensation by visiting www.northernrailway.co.uk/delay-repay."
