The M60 will be closed in both directions at Simister Island between junctions 17 and 18 from Saturday night, with drivers warned of delays of up to four hours.
Closure times and affected routes
The westbound carriageway will close from 10pm on Saturday until 6am on Monday. The eastbound closure will come into place at 11.59pm on Saturday, also until 6am on Monday.
The closure is set to affect drivers travelling to and from Rochdale, as well as motorists in Heywood, Middleton, Prestwich, Whitefield and Salford.
Diversions and warnings
Full diversions will be in place with clear signposting. National Highways is working with Transport for Greater Manchester, local authorities and emergency services to minimise disruption.
Highways England said: "Severe congestion and significant delays are expected, with motorists urged to plan ahead, allow extra time for their journeys and, where possible, avoid the area during the closure."
Construction project details
Francis Oliver, National Highways Senior Project Manager, said the work is vital as Simister Island is used by more than 90,000 vehicles daily. The scheme will upgrade the M60 to five lanes in both directions and construct a new loop road.
Four concrete gantries carrying motorway signage are being removed as part of the ongoing project. The gantries weigh between 90 and 120 tonnes each and have reached the end of their operational life.
