M6 Motorway Shut After Medical Emergency: Air Ambulance Lands
M6 closed northbound after driver medical episode

Major Motorway Closure Following Medical Incident

A significant incident has led to the complete closure of the M6 motorway in Cumbria. The northbound carriageway is shut between junction 42 and junction 43 after the driver of a light goods vehicle experienced a medical episode.

Emergency services, including Cumbria Police, a road ambulance, and an air ambulance, were swiftly dispatched to the scene. To facilitate the emergency response, traffic on the southbound side was temporarily held.

Diversion Route for Stranded Motorists

National Highways has implemented a formal diversion route for affected drivers. Motorists are advised to follow the Hollow Circle diversion symbol displayed on road signs. The official route is as follows:

  • Exit the M6 at junction 42 (Golden Fleece) and take the second exit onto the A6 westbound towards Carlisle.
  • Turn right at the London Road/Eastern Way traffic lights onto Eastern Way.
  • Continue and then turn right at the Eastern Way/Warwick Road traffic lights onto the A69.
  • Take the A69 eastbound to re-join the M6 at junction 43.

Investigation and Expected Reopening

Authorities have confirmed that no investigation work will be required at the scene, which should allow for a quicker reopening of the carriageway. A spokesperson for National Highways stated that while Cumbria Police remain on site, they are hoping to reopen the northbound carriageway soon.

This is a developing situation, and drivers are urged to plan alternative journeys and check for the latest traffic updates before travelling.
