The M6 has been closed northbound following a lorry fire that has led to extensive queues and delays. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to the incident shortly after 6pm on Thursday, with the blaze reported between junctions 21 and 21A near Warrington.
Fire crews from Birchwood, Lymm and Warrington were dispatched to the scene, arriving to find the trailer of the lorry well alight. The driver had already managed to separate the cab from the trailer before firefighters began tackling the flames.
The motorway remains fully shut while emergency services work to extinguish the fire and check for hotspots. National Highways has reported delays of around 45 minutes, with traffic stretching back roughly eight miles towards the M56 interchange.
A spokesperson for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that crews were dampening down the trailer and monitoring the situation. Motorists are being advised to seek alternative routes and allow extra time for their journeys.
