Lexus, a brand that claims to have founded the luxury SUV scene back in 1998 with the original RX, has entered a new era with its fifth-generation model. For the first time in the model's history, buyers can now opt for a plug-in hybrid powertrain, signalling a significant shift for the well-established nameplate.

Power, Performance and Driving Experience

At the heart of the Lexus RX 450h+ is a 2.5-litre petrol engine working in combination with two electric motors and an 18.1kWh battery. This all-wheel-drive system, which Lexus calls E-FOUR, produces a healthy 304bhp. This grants the substantial vehicle, weighing just over 2.1 tonnes, a 0-62mph time of 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 124mph.

The key figure for potential owners, however, is the 42-mile electric-only range verified by WLTP tests. This makes the car ideal for daily commutes without using a drop of petrol, offering substantial financial benefits for those who charge regularly at home or work. Drivers should be realistic about the official 235mpg combined efficiency figure, however; in real-world testing, we achieved a more modest 44mpg.

The driving experience prioritises refinement and comfort over aggressive sportiness. It is an exceptionally comfortable motorway cruiser and handles country lanes with responsiveness, though drivers might notice a slight body sway when pushing too hard into tighter bends. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) requires a gentle touch; aggressive acceleration results in a whining engine note without much corresponding thrust.

A Premium and Practical Interior

As expected from the luxury arm of Toyota, the RX's cabin is a high-end affair. Our Premium Plus test model, priced at £70,565, featured powered, heated, and cooled leather seats, a memory function, and ambient lighting with 64 colour options. The interior is smart and well-appointed without being ostentatious, with plenty of soft-touch surfaces and triple-zone climate control.

Passenger space is generous throughout. Front occupants are treated to bundles of room, while those in the back benefit from ample leg, shoulder, and head space, comfortably accommodating two adults or three children. Practicality is further enhanced by a 461-litre boot, accessed via a powered tailgate that features a handy kick sensor for hands-free opening.

Technology, Pricing and Verdict

The RX 450h+ is generously equipped. A central 14-inch infotainment screen provides access to functions including wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, and an in-built sat-nav. While the touchscreen can be fiddly on the move, physical controls for climate and volume are a welcome touch. A clear driver display shows when the vehicle is operating in EV mode.

The model line-up starts from £65,065 for the Premium grade and rises to £77,315 for the top-tier Takumi. This places it at the premium end of the market, but it offers a Benefit in Kind tax rating of 21%, making it attractive for company car drivers. For peace of mind, Lexus provides a standard three-year/60,000-mile warranty, extendable to 10 years/100,000 miles with authorised servicing.

The Lexus RX 450h+ is a full-sized, luxury-focused family SUV that excels in comfort and refinement rather than outright driving engagement. Its distinctive styling ensures it stands out, and it is packed with modern amenities. While its price tag is significant, it offers a sense of exclusivity and a compelling plug-in hybrid option for the first time.
