The Lewes to Haywards Heath railway line will remain closed for at least another 10 days following a train derailment that seriously injured two people, Network Rail and Southern Rail have said.
The incident occurred on Thursday when around 150 passengers were travelling on the London Victoria to Eastbourne service. Three carriages came off the tracks, leaving some passengers trapped for hours before they could climb out via ladders.
Investigation and recovery
An investigation is underway into the exact cause of the derailment, which those onboard described as 'terrifying'. In a joint statement, Network Rail and Southern Rail said teams would need the time to recover the derailed train and begin repairs to the railway.
The statement asked customers to check before they travel and, where possible, use alternative train services via Brighton. Rail replacement buses will run between Lewes and Haywards Heath, serving Cooksbridge and Plumpton, but they have limited capacity.
Injuries and response
The derailment happened at around 3.50pm. While 18 people sustained non-serious injuries, two were taken to major trauma centres. Fortunately, their wounds were not deemed to be life-threatening.
The line closure is expected to last at least 10 days, with recovery and repair work ongoing.
