Bridgend healthcare centre to finally open after years of delays
Bridgend healthcare centre to open after years of delays

A new healthcare centre near Bridgend town centre is set to open its doors to the public for the first time on October 12, after years of delays. The facility, built at Sunnyside Bridgend on the site of the council's former offices and magistrates court, is part of the wider Sunnyside Wellness Village project.

Part of a wider wellness project

The Sunnyside Wellness Village project proposed the creation of 59 affordable homes as well as a three-storey health centre with a GP practice, community dental services and a pharmacy.

Development previously ground to a halt at the site in 2021 after the contractor employed to carry out the work went into administration. However, after more than three years on hold, the work was restarted in 2024, with the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board announcing its completion in October 2026.

Bridgend Group Practice to move in

Once opened, the healthcare centre will become home to the Bridgend Group Practice, which is currently located at Ashfield surgery and Newcastle surgery. With these two sites set to close, the health board said patients' records will be automatically transferred over to the new site.

A spokesperson for Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board said: "From 12 October, the Bridgend Health and Wellbeing Centre will welcome its first patients to receive care in the new, purpose-built healthcare facility."

"The facility will provide modern, fit-for-purpose accommodation, increased capacity and greater opportunities for health and social care services to work together. This will support improved integration, more efficient ways of working and a better experience for patients and service users. The new centre will also become the new home for the Bridgend Group Practice."

Councillors welcome opening

A statement from five Independent councillors who represent the Bridgend town area said they welcomed the opening of the facility, though acknowledged that getting to this point hadn't been "without its hiccups".

The completion comes just months after separate plans were approved to develop a block of 62 affordable flats at the nearby Sunnyside House, despite backlash from a number of local residents.
