Grandparents and dog die in A1 HGV collision

An elderly couple described as 'kind and devoted' grandparents have tragically died following a collision with a heavy goods vehicle on a major Northumberland road.

Details of the Fatal Collision

Christine Routledge, 66, and Stephen Routledge, 64, from Berwick, lost their lives in the incident on the A1 near Buckton. The crash occurred at approximately 7.40am on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. Their beloved pet dog, Bear, who was travelling with them in their Skoda car, was also injured and died.

Emergency services rushed to the scene. Mr Routledge was pronounced dead at the location. Mrs Routledge was taken to hospital for treatment but sadly later passed away from her injuries.

Family's Heartbreaking Tribute

In an emotional statement, the family paid tribute to the couple, highlighting their central role in family life. "Our parents were loving, generous, and deeply devoted to our family," they said.

"They were the foundation of our lives – always offering support, guidance, and unconditional love. They were amazing grandparents to our 10 children who are going to miss them deeply."

The family added that the couple's sudden passing, along with their much-loved dog Bear, had "left a profound emptiness" and noted they were comforted that the three were together.

Ongoing Police Investigation

Northumbria Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) is conducting a full enquiry into the circumstances of the crash. A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released under investigation.

The driver of the HGV and the driver of another vehicle, an Audi, were both taken to hospital with injuries but have since been discharged.

Sergeant Dave Roberts said: "Our thoughts remain with the family and loved ones of Mr and Mrs Routledge at this devastating time. We continue to offer them any support we can."

Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the moments leading up to the collision to come forward. They are asked to contact Northumbria Police quoting reference number NP-20260114-0160.
