Pretty Woman Polka Dot Dress Returns to High Streets
Pretty Woman Polka Dot Dress Returns to High Streets

It is that time of year when reaching for a floral dress seems almost automatic, especially during this heatwave. However, women of a certain age should pause and rejoice because the Pretty Woman dress is making a triumphant return.

The iconic brown and cream polka dot number, famously worn by Vivian (Julia Roberts) to a polo match in the 1990 film, is flying off the hangers in High Streets across Britain. The wardrobe from the movie has long been celebrated, with costume designer Marilyn Vance creating all looks from scratch, commissioning custom pieces, and sourcing vintage garments from dealers in both the US and UK.

Polka dots quietly reappear every few seasons, each time feeling fresh again. From Kate Moss to the Princess of Wales, Marilyn Monroe to Elizabeth II, many stylish women have championed this print. This year, however, it is Roberts' version that reigns supreme. Sitting perfectly between monochrome and overly colourful, these chocolate tones are exactly what you want to wear now.

Topping many wish lists is Max Mara's Martina midi dress. Cut from 100 per cent silk, it costs £705 on the label's website, but it is as close to Julia's dress as you will find. Frustratingly for some, it has repeatedly sold out. Customers report ordering online only to receive an email days later informing them that due to 'quality control' issues – meaning none left – the order was cancelled. One woman who managed to track down the dress in a top London store said: 'I was told it was the last one left in London. It was a size too big but I grabbed it. The sales guy told me, "It's the dress of the season, we haven't been able to get enough".'

So what to do if you have missed out on the Martina? Boden offers an £89 fit-and-flare version with a boat neckline and cinched waist. Phase Eight has the belted Lucinda Spot Midi Dress, currently on sale for £119.25. Mint Velvet also offers a cap-sleeve take for £170, with ruffle detailing, a deep V-neck, and waterfall hemline.

Roberts as Vivian wore her dress with gloves, white kitten heels, and a straw sunhat trimmed with a matching band. For a 21st-century update, I would suggest simple ballet pumps or an elegant slingback if you want a slight heel. No trainers of any kind are allowed!
