Urgent Investigation Underway After Forth Bridge Fireballs Fall Near Scottish Village
A major safety investigation has been initiated after alarming incidents where large, burning fireballs crashed from the iconic Forth Bridge onto the streets of a coastal Fife village, landing perilously close to residential properties and parked vehicles. Network Rail has confirmed it is probing the circumstances that led to the dangerous debris plunging from the bridge onto North Queensferry during early-morning maintenance operations conducted by its contractor, Balfour Beatty.
Regulatory Scrutiny and Immediate Safety Measures
The issue has been formally referred to the UK's principal transport regulator, the Office of Rail and Road (ORR), which has also commenced its own independent investigation into the matter. This regulatory scrutiny comes amidst existing concerns, as the ORR has been conducting periodic inspections of the rail bridge since 2024 due to previous reports of items falling from the structure.
Disturbing video footage from the early hours of Sunday, 18th January, captures the moment materials fell approximately 150 feet from the rail deck, impacting Old Kirk Road below with significant force. The footage clearly shows the debris splintering dangerously within mere yards of houses, electricity cables, and stationary cars, prompting immediate claims that lives could have been at serious risk had anyone been struck by the burning objects.
Political and Community Reaction
Melanie Ward, the Labour MP for Cowdenbeath and Kirkcaldy, expressed profound concern, stating: 'Footage showing burning debris falling from the Forth Bridge into a residential part of North Queensferry is very concerning. The safety of residents and construction staff should always be the priority when works take place, but this is not the first time that residents have reported falling objects or substances from the Forth Bridge.'
She confirmed that her office has contacted Network Rail demanding a full explanation, emphasising that any investigation must place residents' concerns at the forefront to prevent future risks. The incident was reported by a concerned local resident who witnessed at least five burning items falling, triggering Network Rail's immediate response.
Contractor and Network Rail Response
Officials from both Balfour Beatty and Network Rail were reportedly shocked upon viewing the shared video evidence. In response, scheduled work for the following evening was abruptly cancelled while additional safety protocols were finalised. As an immediate precautionary measure, Network Rail has deployed extra staff to act as 'spotters' at ground level and has strengthened on-site containment arrangements to prevent recurrence.
Conservative councillor Dave Dempsey, representing the Inverkeithing and Dalgety Bay ward on Fife Council, highlighted the severity, noting: 'Anything falling from the bridge has the potential to be fatal so it is all serious, but I've never seen anything quite like this that I recollect. After all the hassle there has been with stuff falling off that bridge, for them still to be in the state where this can happen is just ridiculous.'
He detailed that previous community concerns have included falling metal, bolts, dirty water, and fine dust, urging Network Rail to urgently address what he described as a direct 'threat to life'.

A spokesman for Network Rail Scotland affirmed: 'Safety is our top priority and we're treating this report of falling debris very seriously. Our investigation to establish exactly what happened is ongoing, however, as an immediate precaution, we have added an additional team member as a spotter at ground level and strengthened the containment arrangements on site.'
The ORR spokesman confirmed: 'ORR is looking into this incident, which Network Rail brought to our attention in January 2026.' Balfour Beatty was approached for comment regarding its role in the maintenance work. The community council remains actively engaged, maintaining communication lines with Network Rail to ensure resident safety is paramount as the dual investigations proceed.
