A horrifying head-on collision on the A1 in Northumberland this weekend resulted in eight casualties, with two individuals sustaining serious injuries. The crash involved two vehicles and led to the closure of a significant stretch of the major road for several hours.
Emergency Response and Road Closure
The incident occurred near Purdey Lodge on Saturday, February 21, 2026, prompting a swift and extensive emergency response. The North East Ambulance Service dispatched multiple resources, including four ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a clinical team leader, and a Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) crew. The first call was received at 7.30 pm, and crews treated eight patients at the scene.
Two of the casualties suffered serious injuries to the head and leg, while six others sustained minor injuries. Seven patients were transported to Northumbria Hospital in Cramlington, and one was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle. Northumbria Police and National Highways also attended the scene to manage traffic and assist with the incident.

The A1 was closed in both directions between the B1340 at Denwick and the A1167 at Berwick Upon Tweed following the crash.
