Edinburgh Airport has increased its passenger drop-off and pick-up fee by 42 per cent, from £6 to £8.50, making it one of the most expensive in the UK. The rise, effective immediately, is blamed on an "unplanned and wholly disproportionate" £8 million business rates bill recently imposed on the airport.
Fee hike details
The new charge of £8.50 places Edinburgh Airport among the costliest for dropping off passengers, though it remains cheaper than London Gatwick and London Stansted. Electric vehicle owners face an even steeper increase of 183 per cent, as their previous half-price concession has been removed entirely.
Alternative options
A free drop-off and pick-up area remains available, allowing up to 30 minutes of parking. The airport has added extra spaces to accommodate demand. The airport operator stated the fee increase was necessary to cover the unexpected business rates rise, which it described as damaging to both passengers and the airport's finances.
This move follows similar price hikes at other UK airports, as operators grapple with rising costs and post-pandemic recovery challenges. Passengers are advised to consider the free alternative or use public transport to avoid the higher charges.
