EasyJet Unveils New Domestic Route to Cornwall's Coastal Paradise

Budget airline easyJet has announced the launch of a new seasonal summer route, connecting London Gatwick with Newquay in Cornwall. This initiative aims to make staycations more accessible and enhance regional connectivity to the capital, with one-way tickets starting from just £30.99.

Scenic Destination and Travel Details

The flight, operating on Tuesdays and Saturdays from June 23 to August 29, allows passengers to bypass traffic and reach Newquay in just over an hour. Newquay is renowned for its golden sand beaches, such as Fistral Beach, a surfer's haven with lessons and waves ideal for boarding. Smaller bays like Tolcarne Beach offer perfect conditions for bodyboarding, surrounded by dramatic cliffs.

Porth Beach, sheltered by headlands, provides calmer waters and is popular with families due to its lifeguard patrols from May to September and charming cafés near the sand. The route is expected to appeal to business travellers and those on short breaks, offering a faster and cheaper alternative to train travel.

Environmental and Comparative Analysis

However, the new route has sparked controversy over its environmental impact. According to the Trainline's calculator, a train from London Paddington to Newquay emits 15.4kg of carbon, while a flight over a similar distance releases 119.5kg of CO2, making train travel 87% less carbon-intensive. In contrast, an easyJet flight on July 28 costs £41.99 one-way with no luggage and takes one hour and 15 minutes, plus additional time for airport check-in.

Train journeys, while more eco-friendly, take five hours and 24 minutes for the direct route, with single fares starting at £82, but include the benefit of no luggage fees. This highlights the trade-off between convenience, cost, and sustainability for travellers.

Industry Perspectives and Context

Kevin Doyle, easyJet UK Country Manager, expressed enthusiasm: "We are delighted to be launching flights from London Gatwick to Newquay this summer, providing even greater connectivity for customers in London and the South East wishing to explore Cornwall." Nigel Scott, Commercial Director at Cornwall Airport Newquay, added: "We’re very pleased to welcome this new London Gatwick service with easyJet for the peak summer season. Demand for Cornwall continues to grow, particularly from the South East, and this route provides an affordable and convenient way for visitors to access the region during one of our busiest periods."

This development follows the axing of Skybus services funded by Cornwall Council, which ceased operations due to rising fuel costs and a significant drop in bookings. Skybus had been operating under a Public Service Obligation until May 31, with flights at just 20% capacity, funded by the Department of Transport and Cornwall Council via local taxpayers.

Newquay Airport handled over 407,609 passengers in 2024 and hosts routes from airlines like Aer Lingus and Ryanair, including a year-round service to London-Stansted. EasyJet already operates a seasonal Manchester route from the airport, with international destinations including Malaga, Alicante, and Faro, underscoring the region's growing appeal as a travel hub.
