As the summer sun finally graces the UK, a leading driving instructor is urging motorists to adopt a simple five-point check that could be the difference between a smooth journey and a costly, stressful breakdown. The clever acronym, designed to be easily remembered, tackles the most common oversights that lead to summer MOT failures and roadside callouts.
The 'F.L.O.W.E.R' Method: Your Pre-Drive Lifesaver
Tom Hixon, a seasoned instructor from Bill Plant Driving School, has coined the term 'F.L.O.W.E.R' to help drivers remember the essential checks for their vehicle. This isn't about complex mechanics; it's a straightforward visual inspection anyone can do in minutes before setting off.
Here’s what every driver must remember:
- F - Fuel: It sounds obvious, but countless drivers get caught out. Ensure you have enough fuel or charge for your journey, especially before bank holiday travel when traffic jams are likely.
- L - Lights: With longer days, it's easy to forget about your lights. Check all front and rear lights are fully operational, including indicators, brake lights, and full beams. A faulty light is a common MOT fail.
- O - Oil: Engine oil is the lifeblood of your car. Use the dipstick to check levels are between the minimum and maximum marks. Low oil can cause catastrophic engine damage.
- W - Water: This refers to both screenwash and engine coolant. Top up your screenwash to ensure a clear view through summer's grime and insects. Never remove the coolant cap when the engine is hot.
- E - Electrics: Give all electronic components a quick test. This includes your windscreen wipers on a dry screen to check they are clearing properly and aren't perished.
- R - Rubber: Inspect your tyre rubber for wear and tear. The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. Don't forget to check tyre pressures are correct for your load.
Why This Simple Check Matters More Than You Think
Hixon emphasises that these basic checks are not just about avoiding a breakdown. "Ensuring your vehicle is properly maintained and roadworthy is a legal requirement for every driver," he stated. Neglecting these areas can not only result in a hefty repair bill but also in points on your licence and invalidated insurance if you're involved in an accident with an unroadworthy vehicle.
Summer brings its own unique set of challenges for cars, from overheating due to low coolant to increased tyre wear on hot tarmac. The 'F.L.O.W.E.R' method is a proactive, easy-to-remember strategy that empowers every driver to take control of their vehicle's health and their own safety on the road.
