Digital Driving Licence: UK's 42 Million to Get App ID

Major Digital Overhaul for UK Driving Licence Holders

Millions of people across the United Kingdom are preparing for a significant transformation in how they use their driving licences for identification purposes. The government has announced plans to introduce a comprehensive digital driving licence scheme by the end of 2026, which will impact approximately 42 million British driving licence holders.

New Digital Licence and Government App Integration

The forthcoming digital licence will be accessible through a dedicated government application, allowing users to store their driving licence electronically. This digital version will be integrated into the Gov.uk App and Wallet, providing straightforward access to essential documents. Users will be able to view critical information such as their driving licence details and MOT expiry dates directly from their smartphones.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasised the importance of this development, stating, "This is a game changer for the millions of people who use their driving licence as ID." The initiative aims to streamline everyday interactions with government services, making them simpler, faster, and more personalised.

Private Sector Trials and Wider Rollout

Throughout 2025, private trials of the digital driving licence have been conducted in collaboration with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). The Government Digital Service (GDS) team has been actively involved in testing and refining the system. A spokesperson from GDS commented, "We'll continue to test, build and iterate this year, working closely with the private sector to enable the development of secure checking services that are compatible with the credentials stored in the GOV.UK One Login app."

Later this year, the digital driving licence will be rolled out more widely, enabling individuals to store their driving licence on their phones. This move is designed to make it easier and faster for people to prove their identity and driving entitlements in various situations.

Retail Acceptance and Age Verification

UK retailers are preparing to accept the electronic driving licence for age verification purposes during transactions. This development is expected to enhance the efficiency of age-restricted sales, providing a secure and convenient alternative to physical ID cards.

Liz Kendall MP, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, outlined the broader vision behind this digital transformation. She said, "Setting out the 'roadmap for modern digital government' blueprint, the aim is to make the everyday interactions you have with government simpler, faster and more personal." Ms Kendall added, "So you can manage your health records, appointments and prescriptions, all in one place. So you can quickly do your taxes, check your car's MOT status, or renew your driving licence online. And ultimately, to put power and control back in your hands, when you use any government service."

This digital driving licence initiative represents a significant step towards modernising government services and improving convenience for millions of UK citizens.
