Coventry Airport Closes Forever After 90 Years of Operation
Coventry Airport Shuts Down Permanently After 90 Years

Coventry Airport, a historic UK airfield that employed around 50 people, has closed its doors for good. The airport, which opened as Baginton Aerodrome in 1936, famously welcomed Pope John Paul II in 1982 during his six-day visit to the UK. Take That were the final commercial passengers to land on its runway last week, marking the end of an era.

History and Closure

During World War II, the airport served as an RAF fighter station and later became a terminus for holiday flights. In recent years, it was primarily used for private business jets, pilot training, and the Air Ambulance Service. The airport ceased all flight operations on May 9, 2026, with formal closure announced for June 11, 2026, according to the UK Civil Aviation Authority.

The site is making way for GreenPower Park, a £2.5 billion battery and clean energy scheme expected to create up to 6,000 jobs. Mike Murray, project director for GreenPower Park, said: "The closure of the airport is a major milestone as we transition the site to a major manufacturing hub, with the potential to generate around 6,000 jobs."

Mixed Feelings Among Locals

Residents and local figures expressed mixed emotions. Alison Green, 65, who was born next to the airfield, recalled watching royalty and celebrities like Status Quo and the Red Arrows. She said: "I think it's sad. The end of an era." Barry James, chairman of the Midland Air Museum, said: "It's a shame that a more open-minded view couldn't have been taken to finding a way the airport could have been developed for the success of the local area."

The Midland Air Museum will remain open, but James lamented that once an airfield is lost, there is no comeback.

Take That's Final Flight

The airport recently welcomed Take That, who flew in ahead of their final CBS Arena show. Management shared a photo of Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, and Howard Donald with ground crew on social media, thanking the band for their kindness.

A statement on Coventry Airport's website confirmed the closure: "In November 2025 Coventry Airport submitted an application to the CAA giving formal notification of the intention to cease runway operations from 11 June 2026. In accordance with relevant regulations, all affected parties have been notified."
