Cardiff-Bridgend trains cancelled during October half term
Cardiff-Bridgend trains cancelled during October half term

Rail passengers travelling between Cardiff and Barry during the October half-term holidays will face disruption as engineering work closes sections of the railway. Transport for Wales (TfW) will operate rail replacement buses on affected routes from Monday, October 26, to Friday, October 30.

Affected routes and replacement services

The changes will affect services between Cardiff Central and Penarth, Barry Island and Bridgend. Replacement buses towards Barry Island will generally run every 30 minutes, with departures from Cardiff Central starting at 9.10am and continuing into the evening. However, frequencies will vary depending on the destination.

Trains will operate as normal between Cardiff Central and Bridgend via Pontyclun. Early morning connections towards Cardiff Central will also be available, with some services from Barry Island starting as early as 4.51am.

Reason for disruption

The disruption is due to planned engineering work between Cardiff Central and Penarth and Cadoxton, resulting in the closure of affected railway lines. Passengers are advised to check their journeys before travelling and allow extra time to reach their destinations.

Further disruption in November

Passengers travelling in November will also face further disruption, with buses replacing trains between Cardiff Central and Penarth and Barry Island on Sunday, November 8.

Engineering work will close all lines between Cardiff Central and Penarth and Cadoxton, affecting services between Rhymney, Caerphilly, Cardiff Central and Barry Island, as well as services between Coryton, Cardiff Central and Penarth.

On the day, replacement buses will run once an hour between Cardiff Central and Penarth, and twice an hour between Cardiff Central and Barry Island.

Passengers are advised to check the National Rail website for further information about replacement transport and to plan their journeys in advance. Further details are available through Transport for Wales’ planned improvement works page.
