An Air India Airbus A320 aircraft skidded off the runway while landing at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Thursday, forcing an emergency evacuation of all passengers and crew.
The incident occurred amid heavy rainfall, with the aircraft overshooting the runway before coming to a halt in a grassy area. Emergency services responded swiftly, deploying inflatable slides to evacuate the 130 passengers and six crew members onboard.
No Serious Injuries Reported
Miraculously, no serious injuries were reported, though some passengers complained of minor bruises during the chaotic evacuation. Airport authorities confirmed that all individuals were safely transported to the terminal.
Runway Closed for Investigation
The main runway was temporarily closed following the incident, causing significant flight delays. Aviation regulators have launched an investigation into the cause of the mishap, with initial reports suggesting wet runway conditions may have been a contributing factor.
This marks the latest in a series of aviation incidents in India, raising fresh questions about runway safety standards during monsoon season. Air India has pledged full cooperation with investigators.
