Motorists who modify their vehicles without informing the DVLA could face fines of up to £5,000 and nine penalty points, according to motoring experts. The warning comes from EasyQuote.co.uk, which highlights that changes to a car's chassis, exhaust system, number plate, or colour must be reported immediately.
The DVLA has the power to demand an inspection of a modified vehicle and can prohibit its use on the road if it fails safety checks. In addition to fines, owners may face court summons for non-compliant modifications.
Compare the Market warns that failing to report just three modifications could trigger fines exceeding £5,000 and nine points on a driving licence. Illegal suspension lowering and oversized spoilers can each result in £2,500 fines and three penalty points, while window tinting may incur a £60 fine.
Insurance policies may also be affected. Julie Daniels, car insurance expert at Compare the Market, advises drivers to notify their insurer before making any modifications, as failure to do so could void the policy in the event of a claim.
