20p tyre check could save drivers from £10,000 fine

Motorists across the UK are being urged to carry out a quick check using a 20p coin to avoid facing fines of up to £10,000 and severe penalties on their driving licence. As October marks Tyre Safety Month, motoring experts are warning drivers about the hidden dangers and staggering financial consequences of neglecting routine vehicle maintenance.

According to online tyre retailers at Blackcircles.com, many drivers fail to regularly inspect their tyres, leaving them unaware that they could be breaking the law every time they get behind the wheel.

The staggering cost of neglect

Under UK law, drivers must ensure their vehicle's tyres maintain a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. Failing to meet this legal standard can lead to strict consequences for every non-compliant tyre on the road.

James Harding, a tyre specialist at Blackcircles.com with over 16 years of industry experience, warned that motorists risk facing major penalties if caught with illegal tread depths.

He said: "Worryingly, many motorists don’t regularly check the condition of their vehicle's tyres and are unaware of the consequences they could face if they don’t meet the legal requirements."

"Having illegal tyres not only poses a risk to the driver of the vehicle but also to other motorists and pedestrians. If your car has a tread depth lower than the legal requirement of 1.6mm, the amount of grip the vehicle has on the road is reduced, hindering the vehicle’s ability to come to a hard stop, risking an accident".

In addition to safety risks, driving on illegal tyres can quickly lead to devastating financial consequences. Authorities can issue a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points per illegal tyre. For a vehicle with four illegal tyres, motorists risk facing an eye-watering £10,000 fine and 12 penalty points.

Furthermore, if an accident occurs while driving on illegal tyres, an insurance policy could be invalidated, leaving the driver facing further financial strain.

The Quick 20p Test

To help drivers stay safe and compliant, experts recommend using a simple 20p coin trick to check tread depth in seconds.

To perform the test, insert a 20p coin into the main grooves of the tyre. If the outer band of the coin remains visible once inserted, the tread may be below the legal 1.6mm limit and the tyre should be inspected or replaced immediately. Drivers are advised to check several spots around the circumference of each tyre.

Tyre experts also urge motorists to remember the simple 'ACT' acronym to keep their vehicles roadworthy:

  • Air Pressure: Regularly check tyre pressures to ensure they match manufacturer recommendations. Underinflated tyres can sag, reducing handling performance and increasing the risk of losing control.
  • Condition: Carefully inspect tyres for cuts, cracks, bulges, or visible damage that could cause a blowout.
  • Tread Depth: Ensure tread depth remains well above the 1.6mm UK minimum to maintain adequate road grip and water dispersal.
