UK Drivers Risk Hefty Fines Without Simple 20p Check
Motoring experts are urging UK drivers to perform a quick 20p coin test on their tyres to avoid fines of up to £10,000 and 12 penalty points. With temperatures expected to reach 35°C on June 26, hot weather can increase the risk of tyre blowouts due to rapid air expansion. The National Highways TRIP campaign explains how the test works.
How to Perform the 20p Tyre Test
Insert a 20p coin into the main grooves of the tyre. If the outer band of the coin is hidden, the tread depth is legal (at least 1.6mm). If the band is visible, the tyre may be below the legal limit and should be checked or replaced. Always test multiple spots around each tyre, as wear can be uneven.
Legal Consequences of Illegal Tyres
Driving with tyres below the legal tread depth of 1.6mm is illegal. According to the RAC: 'Driving a car with bald tyres can risk a fine of £2,500 and three penalty points. That’s per tyre, too.' If all four tyres are worn, you could face a court summons, licence loss, and a £10,000 fine. Additionally, insurance claims may be invalidated if an accident occurs with illegal tyres.
Additional Safety Tips for Hot Weather
Drivers are also advised to inspect tyre walls for cracks, bulges, or damage. Hot weather can overwork cooling systems and accelerate battery fluid evaporation. The RAC recommends using tyre tread gauges or colour-coded tools for quick checks. Always replace damaged or worn tyres immediately to avoid fines and road incidents.
