Donald Trump has declared he will impose the maximum allowable global tariff rate on imports into the United States, exploiting a legal loophole in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling that struck down his previous tariff strategy. The former president announced a hike from 10% to 15% on nearly all goods entering the country, but this measure is limited to just 150 days under the provision his administration has identified.
Supreme Court Humiliation Sparks Tariff Escalation
This move comes directly after the Supreme Court delivered a significant blow to Trump's trade agenda, ruling that his earlier imposition of "liberation" tariffs was illegal. The court found that he had overstepped his authority by implementing these measures without proper congressional consultation, a cornerstone of his economic policy.
Trump's Fiery Response on Social Media
In a lengthy post on Truth Social, Trump lambasted the Supreme Court's decision as "ridiculous, poorly written, and extraordinarily anti-American." He stated, "Based on a thorough, detailed, and complete review of the ridiculous, poorly written, and extraordinarily anti-American decision on Tariffs issued yesterday, after MANY months of contemplation, by the United States Supreme Court, please let this statement serve to represent that I, as President of the United States of America, will be, effective immediately, raising the 10% Worldwide Tariff on Countries, many of which have been 'ripping' the U.S. off for decades, without retribution (until I came along!), to the fully allowed, and legally tested, 15% level."
He further emphasized that his administration would use the coming months to devise new, legally permissible tariffs to continue his "extraordinarily successful process of Making America Great Again - GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE!!!"
Televised Meltdown Targets Supreme Court Justices
Following the ruling, Trump launched into a 45-minute televised rant, expressing deep disappointment and shame over the court's decision. He criticized the justices for lacking courage and accused them of being "fools and lapdogs for the RINOs (Republicans in Name Only) and the radical left democrats." Trump added, "They're very unpatriotic and disloyal to our constitution's."
Personal Attacks on Appointed Justices
In a particularly scathing segment, Trump targeted Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, both of whom he appointed to the bench. He remarked, "I think it's an embarrassment to their families, if you want to know the truth. The pair of them," highlighting his frustration with their ruling against his tariff policies.
The Supreme Court's decision has forced Trump to pivot to this temporary tariff increase, leveraging a loophole that allows such actions for a limited period. This development underscores the ongoing tensions between executive power and judicial oversight in U.S. trade policy, with Trump vowing to push forward with his agenda despite legal setbacks.
