Barcelona Decide Against Permanent Signing of Marcus Rashford
Barcelona Decide Against Signing Marcus Rashford

Barcelona have decided not to sign Marcus Rashford on a permanent deal from Manchester United this summer, according to reports in Spain. The England international has just completed a season-long loan at Camp Nou, where he scored 14 goals and provided 14 assists in 49 appearances.

Why Barcelona Changed Their Mind

Barcelona, who finished eight points clear of Real Madrid to win La Liga for the second consecutive season, had the option to sign Rashford permanently for €30 million (£25.8m). However, the club's decision to acquire Anthony Gordon in an €80m (£69.3m) deal from Newcastle United last month cast doubt on Rashford's future.

On Wednesday, Marca reported that Barcelona have decided not to trigger their purchase option before it expires on June 15. The report cites two main reasons: first, manager Hansi Flick prefers an attacker who can press effectively from the front, and Gordon is considered a better fit for that role. Second, age is a factor—Rashford turns 29 in October, while Gordon only turned 25 in February.

Flick's Influence

Barcelona's hierarchy were reportedly satisfied with Rashford's overall performance, but as doubts emerged, Flick's opinion became decisive. The German coach's preference for Gordon ultimately swayed the decision.

Rashford's Current Focus

Rashford is currently with England's squad in the United States ahead of the World Cup, which begins against Croatia on June 17. Speaking in April, Michael Carrick left the door open for Rashford's potential return to Manchester United. 'There's decisions to be made on certain things, and obviously Marcus is in that situation,' Carrick said. 'But at this point in time, nothing's been decided. It will be, because it has to be at a certain point, but at this stage, there's nothing to say.'
