"Ay up love, how are you? Welcome to Grantley Hall," is the warm Yorkshire greeting that welcomes guests to the most luxurious hotel in God's own county. This five-star establishment, nestled in Ripon, has been transformed into a pinnacle of opulence after a staggering £100 million renovation.
A Vision of Luxury
Barnsley-born Valeria Sykes purchased the 17th-century manor house back in 2015, with a bold ambition to put Yorkshire on the map. Her vision came to life when Grantley Hall opened its doors in 2019, following an extensive restoration that returned the property to its former glory. The hotel is now the star of Channel 5's new four-part series, Yorkshire's Poshest Hotel: Grantley Hall, which premieres tonight at 8pm.
Unparalleled Service and Attention to Detail
Built in 1680, the impressive hotel boasts 47 rooms, each with a dedicated team of 10 personal staff. General manager Nuno Cesar de Sa, a perfectionist hotelier, ensures that even the tiniest flaws are addressed before guests arrive. "A hotel is where dreams are made, a hotel is where experiences are shared, a hotel is where memories are created," he says, highlighting the establishment's commitment to bespoke service.
Attention to detail is paramount, with features like a pillow menu allowing guests to tailor their rest precisely. Rooms are priced between £1,000 and £3,000 per night, offering unparalleled luxury. The most sought-after accommodation is The Royal Suite, located in what was once the hall's chapel. With elegant cream furnishings, tall windows, and draped curtains, this suite includes a showstopping mezzanine level bedroom and views of the formal gardens.
Emotional Reactions and Personalised Touches
"It's very frequent that people enter this room and they cry when they get in because they can't believe how beautiful it is," Nuno reveals. He gushes, "This could be a room for a King or a Queen, love it, love it, love it." Each room is curated with the finest furnishings, including Egyptian cotton bed linen, and staff maintain logs of guests' likes and dislikes to ensure a personalised experience.
Guest experience manager Kate Baker shares an example of their dedication: "We have been known to go out in our Bentley to collect prawn cocktail crisps for our guests." This level of service is complemented by Yorkshire charm, as porter Henry Harrison notes, "Everybody's your friend in Yorkshire. We're going to give you that Yorkshire welcome, why would we not?"
Behind the Scenes of a Grand Restoration
Grantley Hall wasn't always this impressive. When Valeria Sykes discovered the property, it was in a dilapidated state. She bought it for £6 million and oversaw a mammoth restoration, spending £100,000 and four years to bring it up to scratch. Valeria, who was married to multi-millionaire Brexit donor Paul Sykes until their divorce in 2012, explains, "I've had a fantastic life, but I've had a lot of sadness as well. I got divorced, that's why I could put all the money to this."
She enlisted help from her son Richard and her three grandchildren, Tom, Will, and Emily. Reflecting on the renovations, Richard says, "Once we started looking around the grounds, it was really sad to see how it had been allowed to fall into so much disrepair." The challenges included leaking and suspended ceilings, as well as a seriously damaged main hall, making it "a proper challenge."
Modern Amenities and VIP Treatment
After the restoration, Grantley Hall was equipped with an entirely new wing, a spa, and a plant room. The hotel continues to cater to high-profile guests, as seen in an episode where an American A-lister checks into the Studley Suite. Senior sous chef Shannon Jackson prepares a "very special, VIP photo frame for a very special VIP guest," using sheets of edible gold and emphasizing, "We only use the finest ingredients, the best in the world."
Managing director Richard Sykes underscores the hotel's ethos: "You leave as a friend, you don't just leave as a customer." This philosophy, combined with Yorkshire hospitality and world-class luxury, makes Grantley Hall a standout destination.
Yorkshire's Poshest Hotel: Grantley Hall airs on Channel 5 tonight, March 26, at 8pm, offering viewers a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes runnings of this exquisite establishment.
