York, the historic city founded by the Romans in 71 AD, has been named Europe's most haunted city by the International Ghost Research Foundation. Located just 90 minutes from Manchester by car or train, it offers a perfect day trip for those seeking spooky experiences this Halloween.
One of York's most famous ghost stories involves the Treasurer's House, where in 1953 an apprentice plumber reportedly saw a Roman legion marching through a cellar wall. The ghostly figures are said to follow an old Roman route.
The Golden Fleece pub is reputedly one of the most haunted in the country, with the spirit of Lady Anne Peckett, wife of a former Lord Mayor, said to wander its corridors and rearrange objects.
Beyond ghost stories, York's history includes gruesome real events. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the city's gates were used to display the heads of traitors impaled on spikes after execution.
Even for non-believers, York's ancient streets offer an atmospheric walk, especially during the Halloween season.
