World traveller names Suffolk world's most beautiful place

Rory King, a seasoned traveller from Belfast who has visited between 70 and 80 countries over a decade, has declared Suffolk the "world's most beautiful" place.

King, who founded Rory's Travel Club, spent four years living in the county, which he described as "quite underrated" despite its appeal.

Why Suffolk stands out

"I think Suffolk is absolutely beautiful," King said. "I was fortunate to spend four years living there, and it's quite underrated. There are lots of really nice spa hotels, lovely walks and lots of scenery."

He added: "That's why a lot of people seem to retire there as well, because it's such a beautiful county."

King, who has also lived in New York, New Zealand, Canada and Fiji, recommended that everyone "definitely" visit Albania, but it was Suffolk that earned his highest praise.

Ipswich and beyond

Having lived in Ipswich, one of England's oldest towns, King highlighted the warmth of its residents. "I actually worked in Asda while I was there for university, and I remember during my first week, some of the staff invited me to their house for dinner, which just shows how nice and genuine some of the people there were," he said.

Ipswich, situated along the River Orwell, features medieval timber-framed buildings, more than 600 listed buildings, and a former industrial dock that now houses restaurants, bars, cafés and modern apartments. Visitors can explore Christchurch Park & Mansion, which includes a 500-year-old manor with a Tudor kitchen, period rooms and the Wolsey Art Gallery, as well as the iconic Tudor building Ancient House.

More to discover in Suffolk

Beyond Ipswich, Suffolk offers Lavenham, one of England's best-preserved medieval villages with more than 300 listed timber-framed buildings dating from the 15th century. Bury St Edmunds is known for its historic Abbey ruins, gardens and Edmundsbury Cathedral, and is considered one of the most haunted places in England. Southwold provides a classic seaside experience with an Edwardian pier and colourful beach huts.

King's company, Rory's Travel Club, offers members exclusive discounts on worldwide holidays and hotels for a £10 annual membership, plus organised group trips for solo travellers. For more information, visit rorystravelclubengland.com.
