A seaside town in North Yorkshire, Whitby is famed for its award-winning fish and chips, friendly locals, and literary connections to Dracula and Captain Cook. On a sunny March weekend, one visitor explored the picturesque harbour, Gothic abbey ruins, and bustling streets, finding it an irresistible destination.
Trenchers on New Quay Road, winner of this year's Best Restaurant at the National Fish and Chip Awards, drew a queue by 10.30am. Opting for a takeaway cod and chips with mushy peas and curry sauce for £16, the visitor sat on a bench enjoying the light, crispy batter and golden chips, rating the meal 8.5 out of 10.
After lunch, a stroll towards Whitby Swing Bridge revealed the impressive Whitby Endeavour restaurant ship. Though the bridge was closed, a detour offered spectacular views over the town and River Esk. Crossing to Church Street, the visitor passed the Tolkien-themed Middle Earth Tavern and admired shops selling books, trinkets, and baked goods.
The 199 Steps on Whitby's East Cliff lead up to St Mary's Church and the 7th-century Whitby Abbey. Inspired by Dracula's dog-like ascent, the visitor climbed with their cocker spaniel, stopping for photos that showcased the town's beauty from new angles. At the top, the Gothic churchyard and abbey ruins provided a dramatic, windswept scene.
A dog-friendly café offered a latte and treats for both visitor and dog before descending as crowds gathered. The visitor concluded that Whitby's blend of seafood, history, and scenery makes it a must-return destination.
