Holidaymakers expecting a dream getaway aboard a Wetherspoons-themed cruise were left furious after their trip descended into chaos when the ship failed crucial safety checks.
The vessel, operated by Cruise Maritime Voyages (CMV), was deemed unsafe by German inspectors just hours before departure from Hamburg, leaving passengers stranded and scrambling for alternative arrangements.
Safety Failures Spark Holiday Chaos
Inspectors discovered multiple safety violations aboard the Marco Polo, including issues with fire doors and lifeboat equipment. The ship, which was due to embark on a 12-night 'Wetherspoons at Sea' cruise, was immediately barred from sailing.
Passengers, many of whom had saved for months for the trip, were left furious as they were forced to find last-minute accommodation and alternative travel home.
Passenger Outrage
'It's been an absolute shambles,' said one frustrated holidaymaker. 'We were looking forward to this for months, only to be told at the last minute that we couldn't sail. The communication has been appalling.'
Many passengers reported being left in the dark about compensation or alternative arrangements, with some having to pay out of pocket for unexpected hotel stays.
Company Response
CMV has since gone into administration, leaving passengers uncertain about refunds. The company released a statement blaming 'unforeseen circumstances' for the cancellation.
Wetherspoons, who licensed their brand for the cruise but weren't involved in operations, said they were 'disappointed' for customers but had no control over the situation.
Travel Industry Fallout
The incident has raised fresh questions about safety standards in the budget cruise sector, with industry experts warning passengers to thoroughly research operators before booking.
For the stranded holidaymakers, the experience has left a bitter taste. 'This was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime,' one passenger lamented. 'Instead it's been the holiday from hell.'
