Weston-super-Mare: From 'Worst Seaside' to 2026's Top UK Destination
Weston-super-Mare named top trending UK destination for 2026

The Somerset coastal town of Weston-super-Mare has completed a remarkable turnaround, being crowned the UK's number one trending destination for 2026 after previously bearing the title of one of the country's worst seaside spots.

From 'Worst' to Must-Visit: A Seaside Resurrection

In a stunning reversal of fortune, Weston-super-Mare has been identified as the top trending UK destination for 2026 by coach company FlixBus. This accolade comes just years after the consumer group Which? branded it one of Britain's worst seaside towns in 2023. The analysis, which examined booking data and forecasted search interest, points to a powerful resurgence driven by a blend of nostalgia and novelty.

The Victorian resort, which dates back to the 18th century, is winning over a new generation of visitors with its characterful promenades, large sandy beach, and classic attractions like donkey rides. The Grand Pier remains a central draw, packed with arcade machines, rides, and traditional treats including ice cream and candy floss.

Investing in the Future

The town's revival is being underpinned by significant local investment. A major £20 million Pride of Place project has been announced, which will see £2 million allocated each year for the next decade to rejuvenate neglected areas. Neighbourhoods set to benefit include Oldmixon, Bournville, and Coronation Estates.

Adding to the town's appeal, a Wetherspoons hotel in Weston-super-Mare has earned national recognition. The Cabot Court Hotel, situated in a beautiful beachside location within a Grade II-listed building, has been featured in the prestigious CAMRA Good Beer Guide for 2026. The guide, which adds 900 new entries, celebrates the UK's best pubs based on beer quality, atmosphere, and service.

"I am delighted that Cabot Court Hotel has been recognised for the quality of its real ales by CAMRA members," said the pub's manager, Nik Pipe. He highlighted the team's dedication to maintaining a first-class selection of real ales, including those from regional and microbrewers, and hosting regular beer festivals.

A Destination Rich in Character

Beyond the beach and the pub, Weston-super-Mare offers a wealth of activities for visitors. Those interested in local history can explore the Weston Museum and the Helicopter Museum. The town's independent cafes and eateries are renowned for serving hearty, homecooked meals, while a bustling calendar of markets and festivals provides year-round entertainment.

Located less than a mile from the train station on the seafront, Weston-super-Mare is perfectly positioned for a nostalgic yet novel British seaside holiday, proving that some classics are worth rediscovering.
