John Hayes, a 37-year-old ice skating coach from Whitley Bay, died on June 14, 2025, three days after suffering a cardiac arrest. His father Jerry described him as 'irreplaceable' and said he 'lit up the room when he walked in.'
Early Life and Skating Career
Jerry took John to Whitley Bay Ice Rink for the first time when he was seven. John quickly excelled, earning badges and competing for England before transitioning into coaching straight from school.
Community Tributes
Rachel Pope, whose two daughters were John's students, started a GoFundMe for a memorial bench overlooking Whitley Bay Beach. The fundraiser has raised £1,927 of its £3,000 target. Any excess funds will go to charities associated with the Freeman Hospital.
Whitley Bay Ice Rink posted a tribute on Facebook, stating: 'John grew up at the rink and dedicated so much of his life to our skating community. Over the years, he supported and inspired hundreds of skaters.'
Funeral Details
John Hayes' funeral will be held at Whitley Bay Crematorium on Tuesday, July 7, 2025, at 10:30 AM.
