Venice's Tourist Entry Fee Returns This Week to Tackle Overtourism
Venice Tourist Entry Fee Returns This Week to Curb Crowds

Venice's contentious entry fee for daytrippers is poised to make a comeback this week, as authorities aim to manage the influx of tourists overwhelming the historic Italian city. Starting on 3 April 2026, visitors heading to the iconic canal metropolis will be required to pay up to €10 (£8.70) for access, with the levy scheduled to be in effect for 60 days throughout the peak season, an increase from 54 days in 2025.

Fee Details and Implementation

The charge will apply on specific dates, primarily weekends, spanning from 3 April to 26 July. Introduced on 25 April 2024, Venice became the first major city globally to impose such an admission fee for daytrippers. Advance purchases cost €5 (£4.30), but if payment is delayed until three days before entry, the fee rises to €10 (£8.70).

Tourists can pay the fee through the Venezia Unica website, at Venice-Santa Lucia station, or at local tobacconists. Upon payment, they receive a QR code that must be scanned at access points between 8.30am and 4pm. Exemptions are granted for workers, residents, individuals with disabilities, those visiting residents, and tourists staying overnight in Venice.

Background and Rationale

Venice attracts approximately 30 million tourists annually, with seven out of ten visitors staying only for the day. This surge in daytrippers has raised concerns about overtourism, prompting Unesco to warn that the city's 'Outstanding Universal Value' as a World Heritage site is at risk. Arianna Fracasso, a leading city transport and tourism official, previously stated to The Independent that the fee's goal is 'to safeguard the city from overtourism.'

In a related move, cruise ships were banned from docking in Venice's historic centre in 2021, following a request from Unesco to protect the fragile ecosystem and cultural integrity of the area.

List of Applicable Dates

The entry fee will be enforced on the following dates in 2026:

  • April: 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30
  • May: 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31
  • June: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, 28
  • July: 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26

This initiative reflects broader efforts by cities worldwide to balance tourism revenue with sustainability, as seen in discussions about similar measures in places like London.
