A woman has tragically lost her life after attempting to rescue her pet dog from the sea in Lancashire.
Lancashire Police reported that a woman and a man encountered difficulties in the water in Thornton-Cleveleys on Saturday evening. They had entered the sea to rescue their dog, which had become trapped.
The woman, in her 60s, received treatment at the scene but was sadly pronounced dead at the hospital. The man, also in his 60s, was taken to hospital and remains in a critical condition. Police confirmed that the dog was recovered from the sea safe and well following the incident near Fleetwood Beach Cafe.
A police spokesperson stated: 'Shortly after 8:31 pm yesterday, we were contacted by the ambulance service regarding two people who had been recovered from the sea in Thornton Cleveleys by HM Coastguard. They were treated at the scene, but sadly the woman was pronounced dead at hospital. Enquiries to identify her next of kin are ongoing. The man remains in a critical condition. The dog was recovered safe and well. There are no suspicious circumstances, and a file will be passed to the coroner.'
This incident follows at least 15 water-related deaths during the recent hot weather spell.
