Underground Spa Atera Opens Beneath Glasgow City Centre

A new underground spa hidden beneath Glasgow City Centre has officially opened its doors today. Located beneath 89 Oswald Street, just moments from Glasgow Central Station, this new £8M Mediterranean-inspired bathhouse and spa invites guests to step below the city streets and escape the bustle from above.

A Subterranean Sanctuary with Scotland's Largest Vitality Pool

Atera Bathhouse & Spa is designed to help visitors discover a new pace of bathing, movement, relaxation and connection. The stunning underground destination also includes Scotland's largest hydrotherapy vitality pool, seven treatment rooms, a Technogym-powered gym and Mediterranean-inspired café.

Open to all, atera requires no membership to visit with non-member access starting at £75. The spa's appealing city centre location also means that Scots can embrace their relationship with wellness and make it a regular ritual rather than an occasional escape.

Mediterranean and Moroccan Thermal Traditions

Taking its name from aqua the latin word for water and terra, meaning land or earth, atera takes inspiration from golden hour - the meeting point of sun and sea - with light, scent, sound and water working together to encourage guests to slow down.

Entering via a street-level entrances, guests can follow the glow underground into a subterranean sanctuary centred around a 12m x 7m hydrotherapy vitality pool which is headed to a consistent 37C. The pool, which is the largest of its kind in Scotland, uses powerful hydrotherapy jets to replicate the effects of massage, while lighting inspired by the Mediterranean sun changes the atmosphere throughout the day.

Surrounding it are thermal spaces drawing on centuries-old Mediterranean and Moroccan bathing traditions, including a ceremonial sauna, Finnish sauna, botanical steam room, Hammam, Rhassoul ritual space, cold plunge pools and thermal contrast experience showers.

Treatments, Fitness and Café Offerings

The Mediterranean Thermal Journey takes guests through a sequence of heat, cleansing, cooling and rest. Beginning with traditional black soap and kessa exfoliation in the Hammam before moving through mineral-rich Rhassoul clay, ceremonial sauna and cold immersion. It can be enjoyed individually or booked privately for up to 10 guests.

Beyond the bathhouse, certified atera Advanced Therapists deliver personalised face and body experiences using ELEMIS and Comfort Zone across seven specialist treatment rooms. Spa days pair time in the thermal bathhouse with a treatment and lunch in atera Café.

Atera also incorporates a Technogym-powered Performance Gym, functional training space and dedicated Pilates Reformer and movement studio, with a programme spanning high-intensity training through to yoga, flexibility and mindful movement.

Completing the experience is atera Café which is open throughout the day with a plant-forward menu pairing Mediterranean inspiration with seasonal Scottish ingredients. From salmon and seafood to heritage vegetables and artisan cheeses, alongside Italian coffee, sweet treats and carefully selected wines.

Official Opening and Membership Options

Atera's official opening was marked with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday alongside wellness expert Roxie Nafousi and Kirsty MacCormick, Senior Vice President of Global Operations at bbspa Group and Head of its UK office.

International spa and wellness consultancy, bbspa Group have led the project from initial concept and design development through to pre-opening planning and operational delivery, and will now oversee the ongoing management of atera.

Kirsty said: “Glasgow has a strong tradition of bringing people together, and that makes it a natural home for atera. We wanted to create somewhere people could enjoy time for themselves and time with others, whether that means a regular catch-up, a celebration or a few hours away from a busy week."

Those who want to enjoy the spa regularly can book one of atera's three levels of memberships which start from £140 per month, combining access to fitness, bathing and thermal experiences with additional treatment and guest benefits.

Atera Bathhouse & Spa is now open at 89 Oswald Street in Glasgow. Opening hours are from 7am to 9pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 8pm Saturday and Sunday.
