Flambards Theme Park in Helston, Cornwall, has permanently closed its doors after 48 years of operation, leaving the site derelict and abandoned. Once the largest amusement park in West Cornwall, it was a beloved hub for locals and tourists alike.
The park opened in 1976 as the Cornwall Aero Park, founded by Douglas Kingsford Hale MBE and his wife Audrey. It began as an aviation museum and gradually expanded with rides and attractions, rebranding as 'The Flambards Experience' in 1990 and later as Flambards Theme Park in 2010. Iconic additions included the 'Britain in the Blitz' exhibit and the Skyraker 001, the UK's first twisting drop tower.
Financial difficulties led to administration in 2013, after which the park was sold to Livingston Leisure Ltd. Despite new rides and renovations, the pandemic caused significant disruption. In June 2024, four major thrill rides—the Thunderbolt, Sky Swinger, SkyForce, and Hornet Coaster—were removed due to supply issues, though SkyForce briefly returned.
The park cut admission prices and introduced new rides for the 2024 season, but it was not enough to stave off closure. The once-vibrant site now lies empty and overgrown, a stark contrast to its heyday when it provided cherished memories for generations.
