Cardiff Suffer First Home Defeat as Sharks Power to 36-21 Win
Cardiff 21-36 Sharks: First Home Defeat of Season

Cardiff slipped to their first home defeat of the season as a powerful Sharks side secured a 36-21 victory at the Arms Park, despite a spirited second-half fightback from the Welsh region.

Trailing 17-7 at the interval, Cardiff roared back to take a 21-17 lead, but the South African visitors responded in ruthless fashion to turn the game around and leave the hosts empty-handed.

Sharks take control in the first half

The Sharks drew first blood when Springboks wing Ethan Hooker touched down after just two minutes, following an excellent offload from Lorenzo Julius. Cardiff replied when Josh Adams scored in the far right-hand corner after an incisive break from Le Roux Malan, with Cam Winnett also involved. Jarrod Evans added the extras from out wide.

Matt Romao and Jason Jenkins both claimed tries before the break, giving the visitors a 17-7 lead at half-time. Cardiff were playing into the wind during the opening period.

Cardiff's fightback falls short

Cardiff came out strongly after the break, with James Botham scoring from short range and then from a driving lineout shortly afterwards. Evans converted both to give the hosts a 21-17 lead.

However, the Sharks' bench made a huge impact, particularly Springboks props Ox Nche and Thomas du Toit, who hammered the Cardiff scrum. Du Toit powered over from short range to put the Sharks back in front, with Gianni Lombard adding the extras.

Sharks seal bonus-point victory

Replacement hooker Ethan Bester scored from short range following a powerful maul, with Siya Masuku converting. Romao claimed his second try at the death after making the most of sloppy play by Cardiff, sealing a bonus-point victory for the visitors.

Tries from Hooker, Romao (twice), Jenkins, du Toit and Bester, along with six points from the boots of Lombard and Masuku, fired the Sharks to victory. Botham (twice) and Adams scored Cardiff's tries, with Evans kicking six points.

The defeat is Cardiff's first home loss of the season, leaving them to reflect on a game in which their second-half resurgence ultimately proved insufficient against the Sharks' power.
