UK Travellers to USA Risk £20,000 Medical Bills Without Insurance
UK Travellers Face £20k US Medical Bills Without Insurance

British travellers planning trips to the United States this year are being warned they could face staggering medical bills averaging close to £20,000 if they fail to secure adequate travel insurance before their journey. This financial risk is particularly acute for the thousands of football fans expected to cross the Atlantic for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted across Mexico, Canada, and the United States.

The High Cost of Healthcare in America

Dr Asimah Hanif, an NHS general practitioner collaborating with travel insurance provider Staysure, has highlighted the severe financial dangers. She explains that while medical care abroad can be costly anywhere, the United States presents a uniquely expensive challenge due to its lack of universal healthcare. Standard hospital treatments there are notorious for running into thousands of pounds, leaving uninsured visitors devastatingly out of pocket.

"Many people assume they will only need medical care abroad in the event of a serious emergency," Dr Hanif stated. "However, this overlooks more common health issues such as heat exhaustion or infectious illnesses like flu, which can easily spread in crowded, hot environments."

Vulnerable Travellers at Greater Risk

The doctor emphasised that for older travellers or those with pre-existing medical conditions, seemingly minor ailments can rapidly escalate, necessitating treatment and incurring significant costs. "For older travellers, or those with pre-existing medical conditions, these seemingly minor issues can quickly lead to the need for medical treatment and result in significant costs, particularly in the United States," she added.

World Cup Travel Amplifies the Danger

With the FIFA World Cup generating record ticket demand and drawing massive crowds, the potential for health incidents increases substantially. Common football-related mishaps like slips and trips, combined with summer heat and long journeys, are expected to raise the likelihood of injuries and illnesses among attendees.

Staysure's data from 2025 reveals that the largest insurance claims in North American countries were for:

  • Hospital treatment
  • Emergency medical care
  • Medical repatriation

The average claim cost was nearly £20,000, with some extreme cases surpassing £1 million. "These are not unusual scenarios," Dr Hanif noted. "Things like chest pain, dehydration, infections or a fall can mean scans, overnight hospital stays or specialist treatment. In North America, those costs escalate very quickly."

Avoiding Costly Insurance Mistakes

Dr Hanif warned that one of the gravest errors travellers and football fans can make is delaying travel insurance arrangements or assuming coverage is unnecessary. "Travel insurance is not just about lost luggage or delays," she clarified. "It is about making sure you are protected financially and medically if something unexpected happens. With the right cover, you can focus on enjoying the experience rather than worrying about worst case scenarios."

She strongly advises holidaymakers to organise medical travel insurance immediately after booking their trips, ensuring comprehensive protection against unforeseen medical expenses that could otherwise lead to financial ruin.
