Travel Agent Names Turkey Top Destination Over Thailand and Caribbean

Travel agent Gary Cook, who has lived in 25 countries over 35 years, recommends Turkey—specifically the Antalya region and Marmaris on the Turquoise Coast—as his top destination, surpassing Thailand and the Caribbean. The area is just a four-hour flight from the UK and offers temperatures often exceeding 35°C in summer, stunning beaches, and great value.

Why Turkey Tops the List

Cook, now based in TUI's Colchester store, has worked in resorts across four continents. He says, "I've worked everywhere, but I keep coming back to Turkey—particularly the Antalya region and Marmaris on the Turquoise Coast." He first worked in Marmaris over 30 years ago and has returned as a tourist 17 times.

"It's got everything you might want—stunning beaches, such as the Turunc Beach, incredible history, amazing food, and with an amazing selection of all-inclusive resorts, you can enjoy the views, sip on a cocktail and not have to worry about paying extra while you're there," he added.

Long Summer Season and Value

Turkey boasts a long summer season from April to October, with mild winters offering flexibility. Cook notes, "Even the winters are mild, which gives you so much flexibility for when to travel. Whether you want to go in the school holidays or off-season, you are sure to get your fix of sun."

Regarding cost, Cook says, "With the Turkish lira, British holidaymakers find their money spreads much further. Marmaris especially has something for all budgets—from self-catering apartments to five-star hotels. You've got hundreds of great restaurants and bars, and eating out can be fantastic value. Turkey offers much better value than most European destinations."

Marmaris vs. Antalya

Cook contrasts the two areas: "Compared to the finest golden sand beaches of the Antalya area, Marmaris offers a completely different vibe—a large beach dotted with bars and restaurants, a promenade stretching down to the old town with its markets and bazaars, plus a cosmopolitan harbour. The bay is absolutely stunning, especially at sunrise."

Recommended Excursions

Cook suggests day trips to experience Turkey's cultural heart. TUI offers guided tours of Ephesus, including a pottery demonstration, starting at £90 per person. He also recommends a day trip to Pamukkale, "a gem of Southwest Turkey that is home to unique landscapes and hidden terraces."

Top Hotel Picks

Cook names the TUI Blue Grand Azur as his favorite hotel, run by General Manager Sharon and her staff, offering "some of the best customer service I've experienced anywhere in the world." For families, he recommends Hotel Trendy Lara, with modern accommodation, pools, and activities. For beach lovers, he suggests Liberty Lara, situated on famous sandy Lara beach.
